Causes
- Commonly genital warts- often found in areas of friction e.g. parafrenal skin and prepuce of the penis (also perianally- even in men who do not have sex with other men)
- Consider molluscum contagiosum; skin tags; lichen nitidus (tiny, flat topped, flesh-coloured pimples; may be difficult to distinguish from warts; they may disappear spontaneously but can persist; usually don’t require treatment)
- If there is pain/ulceration, consider herpes simplex
NB It is important to know what is normal e.g. coronal papillae, parafrenal glands or sebaceous glands (fordyce spots).
History/Examination points
- Take an appropriate sexual history
