The Mini-Mental State Examination

NB The MMSE is not really a shortened form of the mental state exam used for assessing the psychiatric state of a patient, but is used in the cognitive assessment of patients, usually in the context of dementia/delirium.  It is a quick test that scores the patient’s ability to answer certain questions and perform certain tasks.

A score of >25 is essentially normal.  Mild cognitive impairment is a score of 20-24; moderate, 10-19 and severe, 0-9.
