APGAR assessment

Used for assessing the general conditions of the neonate.

  1. Appearance (skin colour/complexion)
    1. Blue/pale all over – 0
    2. Blue/pale extremities – 1
    3. Pink all over (no cyanosis) – 2
  2. Pulse
    1. Absent – 0
    2. <100bpm – 1
    3. >100bpm – 2
  3. Grimace / Reflexes
    1. None – 0
    2. grimace/ feeble cry – 1
    3. Cry / pull away – 2
  4. Activity / Muscle tone
    1. None – 0
    2. some flexion – 1
    3. Flexion resisting extension – 2
  5. Respiratory effort
    1. None – 0
    2. Weak / irregular / gasping – 1
    3. Strong cry – 2

Max 10; 7-10 normal; 4-6 bad; <4 very bad
