Literally- ‘below mania’.
Classically 3 or more characteristic symptoms, clearly abnormal, lasting >4 days but usually <7 and, by definition, not serious enough to warrant admission to hospital or interfere with social activities or work.
Characteristic sx:
- Mildly elevated, expansive or irritable mood
- Increased energy and activity
- Marked feelings of well-being, physical and mental efficiency
- increased self esteem
- Sociability
- Talkativeness
- Overfamiliarity
- Increased sex drive
- Reduced need for sleep
- Difficulty in focusing on (or finishing) one task
Rarely requires any serious treatment.
